Photo: Two cruise ships

I’m currently working on the Norwegian Sun. I say “working” but, hey, I’m a juggler. It’s not as if you can call that a real job. I spent last Christmas on the Star Princess, and will back down here in South America to work on the Star again in January. The cruise itineraries are similar, and they crossed paths in Ushuaia, Argentina.

For a more convention photo of the ships at the pier:

Sun and Star 2

And yet again, I find myself taking very similar photos in the same location. For example, I now have the same photo of a WWII gun pointing at a cruise ship in Stanley Harbour featuring three different cruise ships, although I’ve been there on four ships. Two of those four ships were the Marco Polo and the Norwegian Dream:

Montevideo attacked by robots

It’s always fun to see places you know well presented in a film. The best experience I’ve had with that was watching the film In Bruges in a cinema in Bruges, literally right in the place it was shot.

But there’s some places I never expect to see on the big screen. Like Montevideo. There’s really nothing to recommend about the city to movie location scouts. I mean, James Cameron might make a movie about the wreck of the Graf Spee, or maybe there’ll be a movie about its sinking.

But then, I just watched this: Panic Attack 2009. Huge robots attacking Montevideo? Hey, why not?

I posted this photo earlier, but this is the location of the final moments of the above 5 min short:

Robots attack here.

Photo: Boat drill

I took this photo during a boat drill last week. The lens on the iPhone camera isn’t particularly wide angled, but the curved mirror took care of that. Pity the mirror was so dirty.

Photo: wet feet

Today the ship stopped in Ushuaia, Argentina. This is the southernmost city in the world, a fact disputed by Punta Arenas, in Chile. I’ve been to Ushuaia four or five times now. Twice before I’ve taken a taxi then a chairlift up to the Martial Glacier, and climbed as high up as possible before the ice turns too treacherous. I didn’t plan to repeat the trip for the third time, but I left the ship too late to go on the longer excursion I had planned.

So, for the third time I climbed to the glacier, and it felt completely different again. This is the earliest in the season I’ve done it, so there was a whole load more snow than I was used to. I took some fun photos on the edge of the glacier, and then tried to slide down on my waterproof jacket. This didn’t work due to the snow being way too soft and wet. Instead I just ran as fast as I could down about 1km of soft, wet snow. This was a lot of fun, but my feet got completely soaking wet. And cold.

Wet feet.

In the afternoon, while cruising through the Beagle Channel, I mostly sat in a hot tub. The glaciers along this coast are amazingly spectacular, but I couldn’t be bothered to take any photos. I’ve taken photos there twice before, and will cruise the same route twice more in the next month and a half. I’m sure the glaciers will still be there.

Photos: Falklands wildlife

As promised earlier on my twitter feed; a sea lion, a penguin, some other birds, and… oh well, no dolphins today.
