NYC day 16 (and 15) – Out and about in Williamsburg

On Friday night I went to see the New York Mets play the Atlanta Braves. The Mets lost. It was, however, a fun evening out.

Before going to watch a band play I decided to grab some food. The area has the same kind of chic cool as where I live back in Berlin. Except everything is twice as expensive as Berlin. However, good Thai food is worth the money.

After watching Nat Osborn and Co, I cycled up to have drinks at a friends house in Queens. You know, if you’re wondering why the route map showed me going so far North.

NYC day 16 – Nat Osborn

Guess what I’ve not done much this past week? Blogging. I’ve been working really hard on making my holiday awesome, and have fallen behind on posting photos and stories.

Get ready for a few smaller blog posts, each with a single topic. First up, some photos from a gig. Nat Osborn and the Diamond Allegory. I discovered that when shooting in god-awful green and red lighting, switching to black and white looks WAY cooler.

Future Luke (a song for September)

In my list of 50 goals and plans for 2010 I wrote “6.1 Write an album’s-worth of new songs and record them by the end of the year” which I’m interpreting as one song per month. Here is the song from July, although it’s very, very specific to my current life situation in September.

I included the lyrics in the video, as it is one of the faster and more complex songs I’ve written this year. I hope you like it, and I hope it makes sense to you.

And I hope you think I’m cool.

NYC days 13, 14 & 15 – some random photos and updates.

Some random shots from the past week. I’ve been so busy I’ve fallen behind with the blogging quite a bit. Not just that, I’ve fallen behind just looking through the photos I’ve taken.

After juggling at the Pratt Institute juggling meeting, I took the Manhattan Bridge to Manhattan and back. It is the worst ever place for taking photos at night. There is loads of netting on the walkways on both sides, and every time a train or truck goes past, the entire structure wobbles, which makes using a tripod just as useless as not.

I hung out in Prospect Park on Wednesday afternoon, reading a book. This lake has many turtles.

NYC days 11 and 12 – cycling clockwise around Manhattan

I’ve not taken many photos this week. I’ve done loads of things, met loads of people, ate lots of food, and more besides, but I’ve not taken many photos. For a start, I spend a lot of time on a bike, which means I don’t have a camera in my hand.

On Sunday I wanted to walk the length on Manhattan on Broadway, but it was raining. Boo! Instead of taking my bike I caught the subway into the city to do some shopping. Then, later on, I went to a friend’s apartment for dinner. He has a great view from his roof, and the clouds hanging low over Manhattan looked really impressive!

On Monday I decided to cycle clockwise round Manhattan Island. I got most of the way, but then the heavens opened and it just wasn’t funny any more. I caught the subway home.

It was a really great bike ride! The downtown end and all the way up the west side of Manhattan was amazing. The entire way is like a huge park, and I cycled up every pier I could. They’ve obviously spent a shit ton of money making it so nice.

And then I reached the part where the poorer black people live. Sigh. It’s like the city made no effort at all in regards to making the parks nice or useful or anything. I’m sure the issues are more complex than this, but as a tourist I can’t help but notice the massive disparity in care and spending on waterfront parks.
